About the fund
The Creative writing in schools fund will develop and implement high quality creative writing in schools in the North and South West of England. Successful applicants will place professional writers in schools to deliver workshops and residences to children at the transition between primary and secondary school (ages 8-14).
This fund has been created to enable children from places with socio-economic barriers to the arts and with least arts engagement, to enjoy, learn and be inspired by art and culture.
Creative writing is an important skill for young people and is the bed rock of many art forms – poetry, fiction, lyrics, play scripts and screenplays, blogging and more. The fund aims to equip young people to write and express themselves imaginatively and skilfully, especially those who have not had access to such opportunities before. Participating pupils will be encouraged and supported to achieve an Arts Award.
The Creative writing in schools fund will help schools to celebrate their arts and culture provision through supporting them to achieve an Artsmark award.
It will help build a thriving cultural sector in these regions by fostering relationships between schools and arts/cultural organisations, enriching the professional development of both the writers involved and teaching staff, to grow provision for young people in the future.
The programme will see £1.2 million invested in up to three funding awards, with at least one benefiting each of the North and South West over the three years from October 2015 until October 2018.
The Autumn 2015 period is expected to enable partnerships and plans to be further developed. Projects will be delivered according to the school term from Spring 2016.
